MacBook Air M2 pre-orders are now live. You can find all the retailers who have Apple's 2022 laptop available to buy just below. Stock levels remain solid after the initial rush, but some of the most popular models are selling out and there are shipping delays at the Apple Store for some configurations.

The new MacBook Air (M2, 2022) was originally announced at the manufactuer's recent WWDC 2022 event. As the name suggests, the new device is powered by the latest and upgraded M2 chip. As well as that performance-boosting chip, the laptop comes with a larger and brighter 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, a thinner and lighter design, a huge 18-hour battery life, a 1080p Full HD webcam and the return of MagSafe charging. You can also customise the new MacBook Air in four different colors, including Midnight, Starlight, Space Grey and Silver.

Prices starts at $1,199 / £1,249 for the cheapest version of the new MacBook Air with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD storage. That's $200 / £250 more than the lowest price for the current MacBook Air M1, though it we have seen MacBook deals for even less. Could that older laptop fall even further during Prime Day?

Apple: starting from $1,199 / £1,249 - shipping delays on some models (opens in new tab)
Naturally, the Apple Store is a good place to check first when it comes to pre-orders for the new MacBook Air M2. Currently, it has the new laptop available to buy in the US and UK with a variety of customisation options. You can play around with the different upgrade options such as storage, RAM and included software, but watch out for potential shipping delays of up to three weeks.

Best Buy: pre-orders live now from $1,199 (opens in new tab)
All versions of the new MacBook Air M2 are listed on Best Buy with the option to pre-order now. One potential benefit of going with Best Buy is they regularly offer large discounts when you trade in your old devices. Just know that it might not be as large as the rebate offered directly by Apple. You also get Apple Music and Apple News Plus free for six months, as well as three months free Apple TV Plus.

Electronics retailer B&H Photo has a selection of MacBook Air M2 devices available to pre-order from its online store. You can browse them all right now, including all the different storage size and color options.

Amazon (UK): pre-orders now live from £1,249 (opens in new tab)
The store page for the latest MacBook Air M2 is now live at Amazon UK and the laptop is available for purchase. Some storage sizes and colors are currently showing as unavailable but we expect this to update throughout the day.

Very: available now from £1,249 (opens in new tab)
Online department store Very has now put the latest MacBook Air M2 up for pre-order. The standard version for £1,249 in Midnight Black is currently selling fast so we wouldn't wait around too long if you're looking to buy that from Very. For deals hunters you can currently get the MacBook Air M1 for £899 (opens in new tab) - it's only be cheaper than this once before.

Currys: live now - but only the £1,499 model (opens in new tab)
UK retailer Currys is now taking pre-orders for the new M2 MacBook Air, but we're only seeing the more expensive £1,499 model. The cheaper version may be added later today, so we will update you as soon as we spot it.

John Lewis: on sale soon, with two year guarantee included (opens in new tab)
Product pages are up at John Lewis for both the MacBook Air M2 with 256GB or 512GB of storage. These are priced at £1,249 and £1,549, respectively, so in-line with the announcement from Apple. It appears all color choices will be available and there might be the possibility to trade-in your old MacBook for up to £450 in credit if an existing promotion carries over. John Lewis is a good place to buy new tech from, too, as a two year guarantee is included in the purchase price.

Should I pre-order the MacBook Air M2?

If you're desperate to get your hands on the MacBook Air M2 then it's definitely a good idea to pre-order on July 8. It's highly likely that the new MacBook Air 2022 will sell out shortly after launch if it follows the pattern we've seen with other recent Apple product launches. If that happens, it could be difficult to buy for a good few weeks as you wait for the next batch of stock to arrive.

Is it worth upgrading to the MacBook Air M2?

Our resident computing experts have only had a brief hands-on with the MacBook Air M2 so it's hard to give a definitive answer to whether you should upgrade from the last-generation MacBook Air right now. The older laptop is simply so good - it's been at the top of our best laptop guide for a few years now - that this new version would need to be a dramatic improvement to unseat it.

That said, early signs suggest the MacBook Air (M2, 2022) offers a more modern and enhanced experience thanks to the new screen and design changes so there's definitely an argument for pre-ordering the latest version. The main sticking point for most is likely the price. The previous MacBook Air M1 is at least $200 less than this new version - and we've seen it for as low as $799 during major sales events.
